Though in my fine arts degree I explored all other media, I choose to work in watercolor because of the element of surprise. The artist must be willing to let go of complete control, taking a back seat to the movement and caprice of paint in water. I have lived in all watery places--one of them a rainforest. Water is Life!

Painting a flower is like a painting a portrait, as I see these works as intimate views of unique individuals. Each year, I visit gardens (my own and others) to take pictures of blooms that catch my attention, and use some of these as references for large-scale renderings.

Born in Virginia and based in Seattle, Onaytonie is a mixed-media contemporary artist and photographer whose practice center's Black identity, memory, and emotional storytelling. Drawing from personal narrative, cultural history, and the poetics of everyday life, her work investigates how lived experience can be translated into visual form. Through portraiture, symbolism, and material exploration, she creates compositions that examine the intersections of resilience, vulnerability, and self-representation.
Her work is deeply informed by the women who raised her—her mother, grandmothers, aunties, and mentors—whose presence continues to shape her understanding of strength, care, and legacy. By centering Black women as primary subjects, she challenges their historical marginalization while creating space for softness, complexity, and visibility. The recurring use of florals and symbolic elements functions as both tribute and reclamation, offering gestures of recognition and honor within the visual field.
Working across acrylic, mixed media, and photography, Onaytonie employs texture, color, and layered composition as tools for emotional articulation. Her practice emphasizes intentional mark-making and material presence, allowing each piece to operate as both personal reflection and cultural dialogue. Through this work, she invites viewers into moments of pause, reflection, and connection.
